Week in Review

May 7-11

Monday

Today we learned that our letter of the week was Z and our sight word was one. We read a nonfiction book all about zebras and wrote down fact we learned in a web. We put together a zebra puzzle in math. In math we also talked about the hour hand on the clock and made our own clocks! We went to P.E. and music today.

Tuesday

Today we read a fiction story called, Zink the Zebra. We learned that everyone is different and that being different makes us special! We made our own zebras today and colored them all different to show how unique we all are. Today in science we labeled the different parts of a flower.

Wednesday

Today we had art! We read a story called, Zin Zin Zin a Violin and made words that ended with "in". We always have a great time making new words! In math we learned about what a function machine is. Please ask me to show you.

Thursday

Today we had LMC and P.E. We read a story called, Animal Strike at the Zoo, and worked on a zoo book with a partner. In Science, we created a poster with a partner of a flower. We had to draw the flower and label all of the parts (roots, stem, leaves, flower and seeds). In math we played the game "high roller".

Friday

Today we worked on a special project. We made sight word flowers that are being displayed in the hallway and we played sight word bingo. In science we ended up our plant unit by taking home our seeds we planted. In LMC today we did pulp painting to end our study of Denise Fleming. Ask me to tell you all about it.

April 23-27

Monday

Today we began learning about dictionaries and we got to see a few different examples of them.  We read Jump Frog Jump and learned a new vocabulary word, "wrapped".  We put frogs in order in math by 5's. We went to P.E. and Music today. We had our last author study with Mrs. Keethler. She taught us all about Mo Willems.

Tuesday

We read a book about our Earth and talked about conserving energy. We played a plus or minus game in math and had fun with our tables.  We went to Music and P.E. again and had a great time! 

Wednesday

Today we read a book called, The Jacket I Wear in the Snow and talked about adjectives.  We made our own jackets and talked about what they look and feel like.  We played another dice game in math with a partner.  We went to Art today!

Thursday

Today we read a story called, The Jester Has Lost His Jingle. We talked about what a "jester" is and then read the story to see if we were right!  We went to the LMC and began learning about a new author, Denise Fleming and we went to P.E.

Friday

Today we read a J Alphatales book and did our tracking books.  We talked more about different vocabulary words and got to look at the dictionaries again.  We did a puzzle in math and talked about recycling in Science.

April 9-13

Monday:

Today we learned what reading "fluently" means and practiced doing this on our own. We used a small decodable book to practice and then we got to try reading fluently to our friend.  We went to P.E. and music today!
Tuesday:

Today we went to the LMC and bought books at the book fair. Mrs. Guttmann also read us two books.  We went to both P.E. and music again!  We learned how being aware of the both the spaces and periods help us to read fluently. We practiced by ourselves and with a partner. We also made 3D shapes with straws and twist ties.

Wednesday:
Today we learned about exclamation marks and question marks and how they help us read fluently too!  We practiced all together and then we made our own books to practice with.  We did "making words" today with the -ill word family.  In math we learned all about the quarter.
Thursday:
Today we read a book called, Look Closer and then made our own book just like the author did.  We played a dice addition game in math with a partner and had a great time!  We did "making words" again but this time we used the -ook word family!
Friday:

Today was a busy day!  We read a book about vacations and talked all about our favorite vacations. Boy did we go to a lot of places!!  We had Justin's All About Me and he did a great job.  We also got to watch the band and orchestra perform for us! That was so neat to see!

April 2-5

KB’s Week in Review: April 2-5
Monday:

Today we started focusing on a reading strategy a day and today we worked on “getting your mouth ready” and “looking at the picture clues”.  We practiced as a whole class and then worked individually in our own small books we made. It is fun learning to decode words!

Tuesday:

Today we worked on “chunking”, which is finding small words we know inside larger words to help us decode the word.  We got to do a word search with our friends today!  We went to P.E. and music and had a great time. 

Wednesday:

Today we worked on “skipping and reading on”.  This is a hard strategy but we did a great job practicing as a class.  We made our own small books again and practiced our new strategy. We had KinConnect today and Mrs. Wang did a great job!

Thursday:

Today we worked on “what makes sense” when decoding a word. We made a tracking book and had to write a word on the line that would make sense in the sentence. That was fun!  We talked about dividing things in half in math and symbolic representations of patterns.

Friday:

March 19-23

KB’s Week in Review:

Monday:

Today we compared the work of author, Kevin Henkes!  We talked about his style and illustrations. We read the stories, Old Bear and Kitten’s First Full Moon.  Mrs. Keethler came in and talked even more about Kevin Henkes. It was a fun day!

Tuesday:

No School

Wednesday:

Today we went to art and got back our fish pictures.  Today we compared the work of author, Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. We read the stories, Apples, Apples, Apples, Snow, and Fly Monarch Fly.  In math we used the calculators to practice skip counting!

Thursday:
Today we learned about the author Helen Lester. We read the stories, Hurty Feelings and Me First and compared them.  We learned that Helen Lester has a lesson in each of her books. Wow!  In math we played a "read my mind" game using attribute blocks and worked on measuring.

Friday:
Today we enjoyed a mixed up day due to the early dismissal. We had calendar first and daily five last! We read the story, Where the Wild Things Are and did many different activities including a sequencing activity and a listening activity.

March 12-16

KB’s Week in Review:
Monday:
Today we had a substitute teacher and she was nice!  We learned that our letter this week was O and our popcorn word was see.  We found out that the letter O makes two sounds. Today we focused on the short O sound. We read a story called, Oopsy Otter.
Tuesday:
Today we focused on the long O sound. We read a story called, Owen, and discussed how the mom helped solve the problem in the story.  We went to P.E. and music today. We are practicing hard for our upcoming musical on Friday.
Wednesday:

Today we read the story Olivia and did a character sketch.  We practiced our musical today with Mrs. Burck. In math we did math centers focusing on money, measuring, graphing and numbers.  Today we also had time to do social centers!

Thursday:

Today we had L.M.C., P.E. and an extra musical practice!  We did a great job practicing again and got a lot of compliments from Mrs. Burck.  We read a St. Patrick’s Day story and did some writing about what we would wish for if we had a four leaf clover!  These will be on display as you walk into Kendall School.
Friday:

Today we talked about both the long and short sounds the vowels make. We read a book called, Bad Dog Marley, and made words in the –og family.  This afternoon we had our much anticipated musical Augustus and His Smile. The kids did a great job and had so much fun putting the musical on for their families. Thanks to everyone who came to watch!

KB’s Week in Review:
Monday:

Today we went to P.E. and music. In P.E. we played fitness tag.  We read the story, Augustus the Tiger in music.  Today we read Froggy Eats Out, during writer’s workshop, and we had the chance to create our very own menu.  In math we played “I spy” with shapes and wrote 5’s numbers.

Tuesday:

Today we went to P.E. and music again!  We read the story, Pinkalicious, and did our own story maps.  In math we talked about the dime and learned which president was on the dime. Ask me if I remember. We learned that our letter this week is K and our popcorn words are play and do.

Wednesday:

Today we went to art and colored socks and shoes.  We worked on our poem books today. We read the story Just Because and talked about being respectful. We also read Benny’s Pennies and talked about the different coins and we even learned a cool new song.

Thursday:

Today we went to the L.M.C. and learned more about the author, Mem Fox. We also had P.E.  We read the story, Aunt Isabel Tells a Good One and talked about writing our own stories.  We also did a tracking book for the letter K.

Friday:

Today we had a crazy afternoon!  We had an extra music practice for our musical, KinConnect and Victoria’s All About Me.  Wow!  Victoria did a great job.  We created our own stories today with a setting, main character, problem and a solution.

Feb. 27-Mar. 1

Monday

Today we read a nonfiction book and did a KWL.  We sure did know a lot about bears!!  We used 3 bears to create a picture of something we learned about bears. In math we learned all about the nickel. Ask me who the president is and what the building is on the back.

Tuesday

Today we read a nonfiction book about butterflies.  We did another KWL but this time we did it all by ourselves!  We all have so much background knowledge.  In math we learned about 3D shapes (sphere, cylinder, cube and cone). We went to P.E. and music today.

Wednesday

Today we read a nonfiction book about bees. Wow, there is a lot to learn about bees!!  Ask me to tell you which bee has a stinger, the boy or the girl bee.  We measured time today in math and learned about the penny.

Thursday

Today was fun! We made a menu and used surveys and graphs to decide what foods to add to our menu.  The Brown Bear Restaurant menu was printed and added to our kitchen center. What fun!!

Today we learned all about Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president.  We had fun learning what Abe liked to do when he was our age.  We also made a hat and wrote what we would hide in our hat just like Lincoln hid his papers in his.  We made a log cabin, just like Abe's. Please help me glue a penny in the door.

Thursday

Today we learned about George Washington, our 1st president.  We compared the two presidents and wrote facts about Washington.  We watched a Discovery Education video about George Washington and his family.

Friday

Today we learned about our 44th president, Barack Obama.  We got to see pictures of him, his family and even his dog Bo.  We wrote facts that we learned and talked about what we would do if we were president. I think there are some future presidents in our class!! We watched a Discovery Education video about what a government is and about the U.S. symbols.

Feb. 13-17

Monday

Today we The Very Hungry Caterpillar and wrote a list of all the foods he ate.  We learned that our  letter of the week was H and our popcorn word was you.  We worked on some writing while using our "offices" to make sure we were only looking at our own work.  In math we talked about measurement.

Tuesday

Today is Valentine's Day! We celebrated by reading many different books, making our bags, and having a wonderful party. Thanks to the moms who helped organize and put on the party. The kids had a great time!!

Wednesday

Today we read the story Hedgie's Surprise by Jan Brett.  We answered a question when it was over and wrote our answers down on paper.  In math we practiced counting by 5's and did a dice roll game.

Thursday

Today we read some opposite books.  One was Old Hat, New Hat and the other was called Paddington's Opposites. We made a hat book and added our own opposite pair.  We had L.M.C. where we are learning about the author Mem Fox.  We also went to P.E. and had fun as usual!

Friday

Today we read the story, The Happy Hedgehog and we talked about what makes us happy. Ask me what makes me happy!  We worked on putting a hammer puzzle together and some of us even made up a story to go along with it.  We had Ella's All About Me today and she did a great job!!

Feb. 6-10

Monday

Today was the 100th day of school!!! We read all kinds of 100th day books and did many different activities.  We had so much fun seeing everyone's 100th day collections and practiced counting and sorting them by 2's, 5's and 10's.  We even made a class book!

Tuesday

Today we learned that our letter of the week was L and our popcorn word was it. We read a book about lunch and wrote about what we like to eat for lunch.  In math we talked about tally marks and worked on counting by 5's/

Wednesday

Today we read a story called, How Leo Learned to be King.  We talked about being friendly to one another just like Leo learned how to be in the story.  We made super cute lion faces and worked on those important fine motor skills.

Thursday

Today is Open House! We are so excited to come back to school in the night time.  We read a book about directional words and then made our own book about a ladybug.  In math we found out what a real "foot" (the measuring kind) was.  We read a book called, "How Big is a Foot?" and measured out how big a bed is when you use the real measuring foot and how big it would be if we used our own feet.

Friday

Today we did our L tracking book and used our cool fingers to practice tracking the words we are reading.  We took a walk upstairs to see the 3rd graders habitats in the hallways. They were cool!!  Mrs. Bernholdt came in for KinConnect and we had fun learning about a Matreshka doll.  We also got to hear all about Jake. He did a great job!

Jan. 30-Feb. 3

Monday

Today we read Jamaica's Find and learned about how to ask questions while reading or listening to a story.  We also worked on making predictions.  In math we played the "whats my number" game. We learned that our letter this week is I and our popcorn word is in.

Tuesday

Today we read a story called Imagine.  We got to use our imaginations to create our own settings.  We also read the story It Looked Like Spilt Milk and used paints to create things with our imaginations.  In math we used the calculators to count! What fun!

Wednesday

Today we read two different stories about the Itsy Bitsy Spider.  We wrote about our favorite part and made a tracking book to go along with the story.  Ask me what was different about the books we read.  In math we talked about measurement. We got to go watch the 4th graders perform their musical. They did a great job!!

Thursday

Today was Groundhog Day! We had a great day reading books, making projects and doing everything groundhog. 

Friday

Today we read the story Pig in a Wig and practiced making words in the "ig" family.  We did our tracking book for the letter I and did some writing for Open House.

January 23-27

Monday

Today we read The Hat and worked on retelling the story using a beginning, middle and an end.  We learned that our letter of the week is F and our popcorn word is on.  In math we worked on two digit numbers. In Science we watched an introductory video on magnets.

Tuesday
Today we listened to Mrs. Brown tell a story using a beginning, middle and end. We got three cards and a partner and we had to tell a story using those three cards. We had to add details in our stories, such as setting and characters. In math we talked about order of events.

Wednesday

Today we had to come up with our own stories to share. We chose to write about something we did over winter break.  We also read the story, The Rainbow Fish and discussed feelings.  In math we got to use our workbooks for the first time to talk about patterns.

Thursday

Today we read a silly story called, Four Famished Foxes and Fosdyke.  There were a lot of F words in the book, perfect for F week.  We got to tell our stories to Gracie's mom while she typed them on the computer!  In math we worked on counting by 10's.

Friday

Today we did our tracking book. Some of us even tried to write the whole sentence by ourselves.  We read a story and did a story map to go with it. In math we played, find the block game.

January 9-13

Monday

Today we read The Mitten Tree and worked on recycling words from a question in our answer.  We learned that our new popcorn words this week are he and she.  In math we looked at different shapes and compared them.

Tuesday

Today we went to P.E. and music.  We read Snowmen at Night and wrote about what we thought our snowmen may do when we go to sleep.  We had some great ideas!  We talked about subtraction in math and practiced subtraction problems. 

Wednesday

Today we had art and KinConnect. Thanks to Keira's mom for helping with KinConnect and making it so much fun!  We read a story called Sadie and the Snowman and created our own freehand snowmen. They are so cute!!  We also read The Little Snowflake and made a snowflake to hang at home.  We are really hoping for snow tomorrow, can you tell?

Thursday

Today we read the Biggest Best Snowman and organized the story by beginning, middle and end.  We did snowflake addition today and we learned how to show our work.  Today we went to the computer lab. Ask us what we did in there!


ONE HUNDRED DAY NEWS!!!!!

Monday, February 6th marks the 100th day of Kindergarten!!  Can you believe your child has been in Kindergarten for 100 days?  Time flies by when you are having fun!!  It is time to celebrate.  We are asking the children to begin a collection of 100 objects.  Ideas for objects are: paper clips, buttons, beads, pencils, barrettes, baseball cards etc.  Please make sure the objects can fit into a large Ziploc bag and food items are not allowed.  Please assist your child in gathering the items, but they should be able to do most of the counting themselves.  Have fun and make groups of 5s, 10s or 20s.  An additional note will be coming home next week as a reminder (an example is on the back).  It will be great fun to share all of our 100 collections!!  Thank you!
